At Dampness & Rot (Glasgow) Ltd, we place the safety of our employees, clients, contractors, and the wider public above all else. In keeping with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and other applicable UK law, we pledge to maintain a safe, healthy worksite.

This policy therefore, affirms our duty to protect people on every job involving damp-proofing, timber preservation, rot treatment, and structural inspection.

Our Commitment

  • Provide and maintain safe working environments and equipment
  • Ensure all employees are properly trained and supervised

Responsibilities

a) Management

  • Our leadership team is responsible for:
    Implementing this policy across all departments and work sites
  • Conducting regular risk assessments and reviews
  • Providing appropriate training and protective equipment
  • Ensuring subcontractors also meet health and safety requirements
  • Promoting a positive safety culture at all times

b) Employees & Technicians
Every technician or worker representing Dampness & Rot (Glasgow) Ltd is expected to:

  • Follow all site-specific safety protocols
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • Report hazards, injuries, or near-misses immediately
  • Participate in safety training and toolbox talks
  • Stop work if safety is compromised

c) Clients & Property Owners

While we maintain full responsibility on site, we ask our clients to:

  • Provide accurate property access details
  • Notify us of any known structural hazards (e.g., asbestos, unstable walls)
  • Avoid interfering with active work areas

Risk Assessments

We carry out site-specific risk assessments before commencing any work, identifying:

  • Hazardous materials (e.g., mould spores, wood rot, chemicals)
  • Structural risks (e.g., damp-damaged floors, wet plaster)
  • Environmental concerns (e.g., confined spaces, poor ventilation)

Control measures are put in place based on this assessment, including ventilation, PPE, containment procedures, and safe work methods.

Use of Hazardous Substances

Certain treatments, such as chemical damp-proofing or timber preservatives, contain regulated materials. We therefore ensure that:

  • All chemicals are stored, handled and disposed of in line with COSHH requirements
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are on-site and accessible for every product used
  • Treated areas are signposted, adequately ventilated and kept secure

Occupants, especially children and pets, are excluded during application and for any recommended re-entry period.

Training and Competence

  • We provide regular health and safety training to all employees, including:
    Safe handling of chemicals and equipment
  • Manual handling and working at height
  • First aid and emergency response
  • Asbestos awareness (when applicable)
  • PPE use and maintenance

All staff are trained to industry standards and updated regularly to maintain high levels of expertise and compliance.

Tools, Equipment, and PPE

We ensure all tools and equipment used on-site are:

  • Maintained and inspected regularly
  • Used according to the manufacturer’s guidance
  • Safe and appropriate for the task
  • Our teams are equipped with the necessary PPE, including:
    Safety footwear
  • Gloves
  • Respiratory protection (when required)
  • Hard hats (for construction sites)

Incident Reporting and Emergency Response

Every accident, near-miss, or injury-whether clearly serious or seemingly trivial-must be relayed at once to the on-site supervisor. Our team will:

  • Document each event for internal review
  • Implement corrective steps to stop recurrence
  • Maintain written emergency procedures posted in key locations
  • Keep first-aid kits fully stocked and ensure personnel understand basic care

COVID-19 & Biohazard Measures (if applicable)

We continue to follow UK government guidelines related to biohazard safety, including:

  • Use of masks and gloves when appropriate
  • Sanitisation of tools and surfaces
  • Social distancing on-site when feasible
  • Rescheduling visits for symptomatic clients or staff
